Safe Beauty

When it comes to our health, I, like most people think about the things I’m eating, drinking, and how much I exercise. It wasn’t until I did my Allergy/Immunology fellowship that I was able to learn much better about the vital role the skin plays in our overall health. Did you know that people who are dependent on topical steroids are 3cm shorter than people without skin conditions. Did you know that suspected peanut allergy may be due to microscopic peanut allergens being introduced through the skin. Well, these are things that specialized physicians know. Certain skin care ingredients penetrate into the skin by penetrating our superficial skin layers and some go further by making it into the blood stream.

I think it is important for people to think of the following when it comes to their skin.

-What are some of the harmful ingredients in our beauty products.

-Is there some relation to the increase in allergies, autoimmune disease, and infertility.

-FDA only bans about 80 harmful ingredients from personal care products vs the European Union bans 1200.

-Testing of skin products and makeup may be unethical and inadequate. Unethical because of animal testing and use of known carcinogens. Inadequate because studies aren’t long enough (end usually around 5 years). Products like J&J baby powder had to be used for ~20years to cause harm.

-Why I started to offer Beautycounter, BC bans over 1400 ingredients and develops product to avoid the use toxins and provide optimal results

So we may never know all of the longterm effects of toxic skin care but I wouldn’t want to find out
